| Interview with Chrille Blomqvist, the man behind GASPOP and the legendary games Calsoon och Pleurghburg: Dark Ages. The games can be downloaded for free at www.gaspop.com We start with some background. Tell us about yourself. Who is Chrille Blomqvist? I am from Gothenburg and I am 21 years old. My biggest interests are game development, music and film. Over to GASPOP. What is the history, when was it founded and why? Me and a couple of friends made a few games using Klik & Play when it was released for PC around 1995. When it was released for Mac (I used that at home at the time) in the end of -96 I think, I made a few games by myself under the name of GASPOP software. When I later started to use PC, GASPOP became rather quiet until I started to work on Pleurghburg: Dark Ages. Hold on a minute here... After some fast mental arithmetic my conclusion is that you started to make games when you were 13 years old! Wow. Yes I belive that could be accurate. But they were not particularly serious. One of them can be downloaded at gaspop.com. Are there any more people involved in the games? Yes. Almost everything is done by myself. But sometimes I get help with graphics and music. Urban Joe is being developed by a rather big team. GASPOP have had a couple of real "hits", for instance Carlsoon och Pleurghburg. Is the goal to become "professional", that is to be able to make a living out of making games, or is the goal to give free, good, amateur games to the world, or perhaps something else? You mean Calsoon, don't you? :) Pleurghburg won five awards in AGS Awards 2001: Best Game, Best Gameplay, Best Story, Best Music, Best Scripting. That is impressive. What happened after that? Were you contacted by any big company that wanted to support your ideas or hire you? No not really, but I did recive, and still does, a lot of e-mails from people who enjoyed the game. I am glad it became so popular. What games do you play yourself? What games inspires you in your work? I don't play that much nowadays. And when I play it is mostly FPS. Occaionally I play adventure games, but I often replay games I already beat before. Tell us about the games you are working on now: Revenants and Pleurghburg: The Asylum. What are the stories and when are the planned release dates? The story of The Asylum is secret so far. To an outsider it seems like the number of independent game developers are steadily increasing. Do you have a comment on that statement? Yes, I belive that is correct. "Independent" adventure games have recived a lot more attention lately. That in combination with new developement tools being released all the time makes people want to try to make their own adventures. The more the better. Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. Good luck with your upcoming games. We are looking forward to them. It was fun being interviewed, thank you! |
